Burford’s Construction prepares the ground for the nation’s power infrastructure. Since 2011, our crews have delivered civil construction and vegetation management for transmission, distribution and substation projects across the Southeast, Midwest and West, from right-of-way clearing and access roads to grading, matting and environmental readiness in difficult terrain.
As part of 1 Pike, Burford’s coordinates its site work directly with Pike’s engineering and construction teams, so projects reach the field on schedule and ready to build.
Integrated engineering and construction services that get the job done, on time and on budget.

Learn moreEvery transmission line, substation and distribution project starts with ground that's ready for crews and equipment. Here's what that work involves.
Burford's crews remove trees, brush and obstructions along utility corridors so line crews and equipment can build and maintain lines safely, and so vegetation stays clear of energized conductors.
Site work for new line construction and for upgrades and maintenance on lines already in service: clearing, access and ground preparation ahead of the line crews, scheduled around the construction plan.
Trees outside the cleared corridor that are dead, leaning or structurally weak can fall into a line during a storm. Burford's identifies and removes them before they cause an outage.
Temporary mats create stable work pads and access routes over soft ground, wetlands and sensitive areas. They keep heavy equipment moving in wet conditions, protect the ground underneath and come out when the work is done.
Burford's builds and maintains the roads that get crews, trucks and equipment to remote structures and substation sites.
Earthwork that gets a site ready to build: clearing, grading, excavation, drainage and the pads that substations and structures stand on.
Site preparation on undeveloped land and on previously developed or industrial sites, where existing structures, soils and underground conditions call for careful planning.
Clearing is only the start. Burford's combines selective removal, mowing and other methods to keep rights-of-way clear over the long term, not just during construction.
Burford's plans site work to meet each project's environmental requirements, including protecting wetlands and sensitive areas, and manages logistics so crews, equipment and materials are where the schedule needs them.
Site readiness for transmission, distribution and substation projects across the Southeast, Midwest and West.
Burford's clears, grades and builds access ahead of construction, so line and substation crews arrive at a site that's ready to work.
Matting and access roads keep heavy equipment moving while protecting sensitive ground.
Hazard tree removal and integrated vegetation management keep rights-of-way clear long after construction ends.
As part of 1 Pike, Burford's coordinates directly with Pike's engineering and construction teams, so site readiness stays on the project schedule.

Coates Covington leads Burford's Construction as President, overseeing every service line across all of its territories. He joined Burford's when the company was founded, after working across the utility industry in operations, safety, fleet services and pre-construction. He holds a Bachelor of Science in building construction from Auburn University.

Chris Kanute is Vice President of Operations at Burford's Construction. He previously served as a Burford's Regional Manager, overseeing operations across multiple project sites and crews, and brings more than 30 years of utility civil construction experience in field operations and project execution. He completed a construction management program at Clemson University.
Burford's crews do the first work on every project: clearing, grading and building access so lines and substations can go up safely.
